Excess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain by non-COVID-19 causes of death

Year: 2024

Publisher: Fundación Weber

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic in Spain caused excess mortality in 2020, due to COVID-19, but also to other causes of mortality associated with the indirect impact of the health crisis. The aim of this study was to estimate excess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain due to non-COVID-19 causes of death, comparing mortality and hospital discharges due to exitus in 2020 and 2021 versus the period 2015-2019. In an exploratory way, we analysed how hospital saturation influenced the increase in deaths from non-COVID-19 causes, especially respiratory diseases, circulatory diseases and cancer. Although a direct relationship cannot be confirmed, the results show a change in mortality patterns, with an increase in out-of-hospital deaths during the peaks of the pandemic.
