Abstract: The aim of this study was to reach a consensus on a set of proposals to improve the current management of Multiple Myeloma (MM) in the National Health System (NHS) and to estimate its social impact by applying a Social Return on Investment (SROI) analysis.
A Multidisciplinary Working Group (GMT) was created that included the main stakeholders in the management of MM. A survey was conducted to collect information from patients on the impact of MM on different life domains. A prospective SROI analysis was applied, with a time horizon of 1 year.
Fifteen proposals were selected for improving the approach to MM, including actions for early diagnosis, psychological support, improved patient information, and rapid access to palliative care, among others. The implementation of these proposals would benefit patients, their informal caregivers and the NHS. The necessary investment would amount to 10.32 million euros with a social return of 43.31 million euros: 4.2 euros for each euro invested. According to the sensitivity analysis, this ratio could range from €3.38 to €5.20 from the worst to the best scenario.
The current management of the GM could be improved by implementing a set of proposals that would, in all likelihood, result in an overall positive social return.
